Employment Options for Military Spouses
Finding meaningful employment as a military spouse in Germany can be challenging, but the KMC offers more opportunities than most overseas duty stations. From on-base positions to remote work and German economy jobs, there are paths for nearly every career field.
On-Base Employment
NAF (Non-Appropriated Fund) Positions
NAF jobs are found at Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) facilities, clubs, fitness centers, child development centers, and community services. These positions do not require a security clearance and are often the fastest path to employment.
- Search on USAJobs.gov (filter for overseas NAF positions) or check the local MWR website
- Common positions: child care workers, fitness staff, recreation aides, food service, administrative support
- Military Spouse Preference (MSP) applies — spouses receive hiring preference over other candidates
APF (Appropriated Fund) Positions
These are standard government civilian positions (GS, GG scale) funded through the defense budget. Found through USAJobs.gov.
- Wider range of professional positions: administrative, finance, HR, logistics, IT, education
- Military Spouse Preference and Executive Order 13832 provide significant hiring advantages
- May require security clearance (timeline: 3-12 months)
AAFES (Exchange) and DECA (Commissary)
The Exchange and Commissary regularly hire for retail, cashier, stock, and management positions. Apply through their respective career portals.
DoDEA Schools
Teaching positions and support staff roles at DoDEA schools. Competitive but excellent positions for educators.
- Teachers need a valid US teaching certificate
- Substitute teaching is available with fewer requirements — a great way to start
- Paraprofessionals and administrative staff positions also available
Remote Work
Remote work has opened up enormous opportunities for military spouses overseas:
- Time Zone Advantage — Germany is 6-9 hours ahead of the US. Morning workers can overlap with US afternoon business hours. Some spouses work US evening shifts during their German morning.
- Reliable Internet — German internet is stable enough for video calls and remote work.
- Tax Considerations — Working remotely for a US employer while living in Germany can have tax implications. Under SOFA, your US-source income is generally exempt from German tax, but consult with a tax professional familiar with military SOFA situations.
Remote-Friendly Resources:
- MyCAA (Military Spouse Career Advancement Account) — Up to $4,000 for education and training in portable career fields
- Hiring Our Heroes — Virtual job fairs and employer connections specifically for military spouses
- Blue Star Families — Career resources and networking
- Military Spouse Employment Partnership (MSEP) — Over 500 partner employers committed to hiring military spouses
Working on the German Economy
SOFA dependents can work for German employers, but there are important considerations:
- Work Permit — You may need a work permit or Arbeitserlaubnis through the German labor office. The process has been simplified for SOFA dependents, but varies by region.
- Tax Implications — Income from a German employer is subject to German income tax and social contributions. This could affect your SOFA tax-exempt status for that income.
- Language — Most German economy jobs require at least conversational German, though some international companies operate in English.
- Benefits — German employment comes with generous benefits: 20+ vacation days, health insurance contributions, and strong worker protections.
Entrepreneurship and Self-Employment
Some military spouses start their own businesses in Germany:
- Home-based businesses (crafts, consulting, tutoring, photography) can operate under certain conditions
- Check with the Legal Office and Tax Center on base for guidance on self-employment under SOFA
- The A&FRC offers entrepreneurship classes and resources
Volunteer Opportunities
Volunteering is an excellent way to gain experience, build your resume, and connect with the community:
- USO — Kaiserslautern center always needs volunteers
- Thrift shops (Airman's Attic, Landstuhl Thrift Shop)
- School Advisory Committees and PTA
- Chapel programs and community organizations
- Red Cross — Volunteer opportunities at LRMC
Employment as a military spouse in Germany requires flexibility and persistence, but the KMC's size and the growth of remote work mean more opportunities than ever before. Take advantage of career counseling at the A&FRC, leverage military spouse preference, and keep building your professional skills.
