Weekend Getaway: Luxembourg from the KMC

Luxembourg City is just 90 minutes from Ramstein. Here is everything you need for a perfect day trip or weekend escape.

Luxembourg is one of the easiest and most rewarding day trips or weekend getaways from the KMC. The capital, Luxembourg City, is only about 90 minutes by car from Ramstein, making it perfect for a Saturday adventure. Despite being one of the smallest countries in Europe, Luxembourg packs an incredible punch with its stunning old town, world-class museums, excellent dining, and unique blend of French, German, and Luxembourgish culture.

Luxembourg City old town (the Ville Haute) and its fortifications are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Casemates du Bock are a network of underground tunnels carved into the cliff face that date back to the 17th century and offer amazing views of the Alzette valley below. The Chemin de la Corniche, nicknamed the most beautiful balcony in Europe, is a walking path along the cliff edge with breathtaking views of the Grund neighborhood far below. The Grand Ducal Palace in the city center is the official residence of the Grand Duke and offers guided tours in summer.

For culture and museums, the MUDAM (Musee Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean) is a stunning modern art museum designed by I.M. Pei. The Luxembourg City History Museum is built into the cliff and tells the story of the city from its founding as a fortress. The National Museum of History and Art has excellent collections ranging from Roman artifacts to contemporary art. Most museums are free on the first Sunday of each month.

Luxembourg is also a food lover destination. The Grund neighborhood at the bottom of the valley is full of charming restaurants and cafes along the river. Try traditional Luxembourgish dishes like Judd mat Gaardebounen (smoked pork with broad beans), Bouneschlupp (green bean soup), or Gromperekichelcher (potato fritters). The city also has a thriving international food scene with excellent French, Italian, and Asian restaurants. For coffee, Konrad Cafe and Chocolate House are local favorites.

Practical tips for your visit: parking in Luxembourg City can be challenging, so use one of the park-and-ride lots on the outskirts and take the free tram into the city center. Yes, all public transportation in Luxembourg is completely free, making it the first country in the world to offer free nationwide public transit. This includes buses, trams, and trains within the country. Gas is significantly cheaper in Luxembourg than in Germany, so many KMC residents make a habit of filling up their tanks during visits.

If you want to extend your trip beyond the capital, the town of Vianden in northern Luxembourg has a spectacular medieval castle perched on a hill above the Our river. The Mullerthal region, known as Little Switzerland, has fantastic hiking trails through mossy gorges and rock formations. And the Moselle wine region along the eastern border with Germany produces excellent Cremant sparkling wine and Riesling.
