TLA vs Off-Base Housing: A Complete Comparison

Weighing your housing options in the KMC? Here is an honest comparison of TLA apartments, on-base housing, and renting off the economy.

Finding a place to live is one of the first and most stressful tasks after arriving in the KMC. You have three main options: TLA (Temporary Living Allowance) apartments for your first weeks, on-base housing, and off-base rentals on the German economy. Each has significant pros and cons.

TLA apartments are your home for the first few weeks while you search for permanent housing. You are authorized up to 60 days of TLA, which covers a furnished apartment. The key is finding a good one. Look for TLA-approved apartments that include WiFi, a full kitchen, and washer/dryer access. A good TLA can make your transition smooth, while a bad one adds stress to an already hectic time.

On-base housing through AFHI offers the convenience of being on Ramstein or Vogelweh. You do not have to deal with German landlords, the commute is minimal, and your OHA goes directly to housing costs. However, waitlists can be long, homes are older, and you have less control over maintenance and upgrades. Privacy can also be limited compared to off-base options.

Off-base housing on the German economy gives you the most space and the most authentic experience. German homes are well built, often come with modern kitchens, and give you real immersion into the local culture. You will use your OHA plus utility allowance. The trade-off is dealing with German landlords, longer commutes, and navigating German utility companies.

For most families, the decision comes down to lifestyle preference. Families with young children often start on base for convenience, while those who want to maximize their Germany experience choose to live in local towns like Mackenbach, Landstuhl, or Kaiserslautern. There is no wrong answer, only what works best for your family during this tour.
