Summer Festivals and Events in the Pfalz
Wine fests, Stadtfeste, Kerwe celebrations: your guide to the amazing summer festival season in the Palatinate region.
Summer in the Pfalz (Palatinate) region is an endless parade of festivals, and it is one of the absolute best things about living in the KMC. From May through September, nearly every village and town hosts at least one festival, and many have several. These range from massive wine festivals attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors to tiny village Kerwe celebrations where you might be the only American in attendance.
The Duerkheimer Wurstmarkt in Bad Duerkheim is the world largest wine festival, despite its name which translates to sausage market. Held in September, it draws over 600,000 visitors over two weekends. The festival features the world largest wine barrel (which is actually a restaurant), dozens of wine stands pouring local Pfalz wines, carnival rides, and live music. It is about 45 minutes from Ramstein and is an absolute must-do at least once during your tour. Arrive early and expect big crowds, especially on Saturday evenings.
Nearer to home, the Kaiserslautern Altstadtfest (Old Town Festival) takes place in late June and transforms the city center into a massive outdoor party with live bands on multiple stages, food stalls from around the world, and beer and wine gardens. The Barbarossafest in Kaiserslautern is another major city celebration. Landstuhl, Ramstein-Miesenbach, and nearly every village in the area host their own Stadtfest or Dorffest (town/village festival) throughout the summer months.
Kerwe (short for Kirchweih, or church consecration) is a uniquely Palatinate tradition. Each village celebrates its Kerwe on a specific weekend, usually with a Kerwebaum (decorated pole) erected in the town center, a parade, traditional food like Saumagen and Dampfnudeln, and plenty of wine and beer. Kerwe celebrations are wonderfully authentic and give you a real taste of Pfaelzer culture. The atmosphere is welcoming, and locals are always happy to see Americans joining in.
The Deutsche Weinstrasse (German Wine Route) runs through the Pfalz from north to south, and the wine villages along it host continuous festivals throughout the summer. The Neustadt Wine Festival in October crowns a German Wine Queen (Deutsche Weinkoenigin). Deidesheim, Wachenheim, and Forst host elegant wine tastings. Edenkoben, Rhodt, and St. Martin have charming village festivals set among the vineyards. Many of these villages are less than an hour from Ramstein and are easily reachable by car or even by train.
Practical tips for German festival season: bring cash because most vendors at festivals do not accept cards. Designate a driver or use public transportation, as German police set up checkpoints near festivals and the alcohol limit is strict. Wear comfortable shoes because you will be standing and walking on cobblestones for hours. And most importantly, embrace the experience. German festivals are warm, welcoming, and genuinely fun. They are one of the best opportunities to connect with German culture and your local community during your time in the KMC.
