Pet Relocation Guide: Bringing Your Pets to Germany

Moving your furry family members to Germany requires careful planning. Here is everything you need to know about pet PCS.

For many military families, pets are non-negotiable family members, and bringing them to Germany is absolutely doable with the right preparation. The key is starting early, because the paperwork and veterinary requirements have strict timelines.

The most critical requirement is the rabies vaccination and EU pet health certificate. Your pet must have a current rabies vaccination administered at least 21 days before travel. You will also need an ISO-compliant microchip, the 15-digit variety, implanted before or at the same time as the rabies shot. Your stateside veterinarian should be familiar with these requirements, but double-check that they can issue a USDA-endorsed health certificate.

For air travel, each airline has its own pet policy for military PCS moves. Most will transport dogs and cats in the cargo hold if they exceed carry-on weight limits. The Air Mobility Command also has pet travel guidelines for space-available flights. Book early, because pet spots on commercial flights are limited, especially during peak PCS season from May through August.

Once in Germany, you will need to register your pet with the local veterinarian and the Veterinary Treatment Facility on base. German rental properties often allow pets, but always confirm with your landlord. Some breeds face restrictions in certain German states, so check the Rheinland-Pfalz regulations if you have a larger breed.

Day-to-day life with pets in Germany is wonderful. Germans are very dog friendly. You can bring dogs into most restaurants, on public transit, and to many parks and hiking trails. The KMC area has extensive walking paths and forests that are perfect for dogs. There are also several German Tierkliniken (animal clinics) near the base that provide excellent veterinary care at reasonable prices.

Budget for pet-related PCS expenses: microchipping, health certificates, airline fees, and any quarantine requirements can add up. The good news is that TMO may reimburse some pet shipping costs. Check with your transportation office for the latest reimbursement policies.
