German Healthcare for Military Families
Navigating Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, German doctors, the Apotheke system, and Tricare overseas coverage.
Healthcare is one of the biggest concerns for military families PCSing to the KMC, and the good news is that you have excellent options. Landstuhl Regional Medical Center (LRMC) is the largest American hospital outside the United States and serves as the primary medical facility for the entire KMC. Located just minutes from Ramstein, LRMC provides most standard medical and dental services including primary care, pediatrics, OB/GYN, orthopedics, and emergency care. You will need to enroll with Tricare and select a primary care manager (PCM) at LRMC or one of the smaller clinics on base.
For routine care, you will typically use the Ramstein Clinic or the Landstuhl clinic depending on where you are enrolled. Appointments can be booked through Tricare Online or by calling the appointment line. Wait times can be long for specialty referrals, so if you need something urgently, the nurse advice line can sometimes expedite the process. The LRMC Emergency Room is available 24/7 for true emergencies. For after-hours non-emergency concerns, there is also a nurse advice line you can call.
Using German healthcare providers is also an option and sometimes a necessity, especially for dental care, dermatology, or when the wait at LRMC is too long. Under Tricare Overseas, you can see host nation providers, but you should get a referral from your PCM first to ensure Tricare covers the visit. German doctors (Aerzte) are generally excellent, and many in the KMC area speak at least some English because they are used to treating American patients. You typically do not need an appointment for a Hausarzt (general practitioner) during their open office hours (offene Sprechstunde), which is very convenient.
The German Apotheke (pharmacy) system is quite different from what you are used to in the States. Pharmacies in Germany are staffed by actual pharmacists who provide medical advice and dispense medications, many of which require a prescription (Rezept) from a doctor. The base pharmacy at LRMC fills prescriptions for free if you have Tricare, but German pharmacies can fill German doctor prescriptions and Tricare will reimburse you. Over-the-counter medications like ibuprofen and cold medicine are kept behind the counter at German pharmacies, so you need to ask for them.
A few important tips: always carry your Tricare card and a form of ID when visiting any medical facility. If you go to a German hospital emergency room (Notaufnahme), you will need to file a Tricare claim for reimbursement afterward. Keep all receipts and invoices from German providers. For dental care, many families prefer German dentists because the wait for dental appointments at LRMC can be very long. The German healthcare system is world-class, so do not hesitate to use it as a supplement to your military medical benefits.
