Best Day Trips from the KMC
Living in the KMC puts you within easy reach of incredible destinations. Here are the best day trips you can take without burning leave days.
One of the greatest perks of being stationed in the KMC is your location in the heart of Europe. Within a few hours of driving, you can visit world-class cities, fairy-tale castles, and stunning natural landscapes. Here are the day trips that KMC families rave about the most.
Heidelberg is just 90 minutes northeast and should be your first day trip. The old town, the castle ruins overlooking the Neckar River, and the charming student atmosphere make it one of the most photogenic cities in Germany. Stroll the Hauptstrasse, the longest pedestrian shopping street in Europe, and grab lunch at one of the riverside restaurants.
Strasbourg, France is only 90 minutes southwest. The Petite France district with its half-timbered houses is absolutely stunning. Visit the Gothic cathedral, try a tarte flambee, and wander the Christmas markets if you visit during the holiday season. Since you cross into France, bring your passport just in case.
For nature lovers, the Palatinate Forest starts right at your doorstep. Hike to the Teufelstisch, a massive mushroom-shaped rock formation, or explore the sandstone cliffs around Dahn. The Trippstadt area has gorgeous forest trails that are family and dog friendly.
Trier, about two hours west, is the oldest city in Germany with Roman ruins that rival anything in Italy. The Porta Nigra gate, the Roman baths, and the amphitheater are remarkably well preserved. Luxembourg City is just 30 minutes beyond Trier and makes for an easy two-city day trip.
For a quick escape, visit the town of Bernkastel-Kues on the Mosel River, about 90 minutes away. The medieval market square, the hillside vineyards, and the chance to taste world-renowned Riesling wines make it a perfect weekend destination. Many KMC families make it a regular rotation.
